Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty

Inspired by a character in Irish writer Kathleen O'Rourke's stand-up comedy show, Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty first came to the screen in a 5min short film directed by Nicky Phelan and produced by Brown Bag Films in 2008. Currently zimmer-framing her way around the international film festival circuit, 'Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty' has already collected a number of audience awards at film festivals in Ireland, America and Australia. The short film will have an Irish theatrical release through Paramount Pictures this year and will receive its television debut on Ireland's public service broadcaster, RTE.

Hurricane Balls

The 'Hurricane Balls' consist of two ball bearings welded together - no easy task! If you spin the Hurricane Balls on a smooth surface, you can use the plastic pipe to blow at one side of the Hurricane Balls. Not only does this keeps them spinning, you can accelerate them up to incredible speeds. Speeds of 12,000 rpm have been recorded for the Hurricane Balls using a laboratory strobe light.
Any smooth surface will work for spinning on, but the very best is a concave mirror, e.g. those round, magnifying bathroom mirrors. We do not supply the mirror, as these are fragile to post, and are readily available everywhere.Once the Hurricane Balls are spinning, you can then use the coloured LED torches to illuminate them, with different colours at different angles. In a darkened room, the effect is magical! grand-illusions.com

Color Psychology

Like death and taxes, there is no escaping color. It is ubiquitous. Yet what does it all mean? Why are people more relaxed in green rooms? Why do weightlifters do their best in blue gyms?
Colors often have different meanings in various cultures. And even in Western societies, the meanings of various colors have changed over the years. But today in the U.S., researchers have generally found the following to be accurate.

Black
Black is the color of authority and power. It is popular in fashion because it makes people appear thinner. It is also stylish and timeless. Black also implies submission. Priests wear black to signify submission to God. Some fashion experts say a woman wearing black implies submission to men. Black outfits can also be overpowering, or make the wearer seem aloof or evil. Villains, such as Dracula, often wear black.

White
Brides wear white to symbolize innocence and purity. White reflects light and is considered a summer color. White is popular in decorating and in fashion because it is light, neutral, and goes with everything. However, white shows dirt and is therefore more difficult to keep clean than other colors. Doctors and nurses wear white to imply sterility. Read more

Designer Steve Kuhl received a request from a client who wanted to give her one and only son of a single and unique children’s room. Among the options were proposals to turn the bedroom into a pirate ship, racing car or a castle. However, the first customer came to mind more.

I Could Make That - Sad panda mask in appliqued fleece

You can use this technique for so many different things, really. My mom has decorated bags and blankets and hats, made Mardi Gras masks and even created a sort of fabric mural for her church’s Advent services with it. It will even feature on her contribution to this year’s Desert Bus Craft-Along. I’m planning to make use of the method in future doll making projects, and who knows where else. Remember that blank living room wall I keep complaining about? Maybe I need to go have a chat with the boyfriend…

What you’ll need:

fleece - black, white and a tiny bit of blue for the sad panda mask, or any other colours you desire for any other masks you want to make
thread to match all your fleece colours
sewable HeatNBond – it must be the sewable kind. You can get it from craft stores like Michael’s, and from fabric stores, for about $5 a package. It goes a fair way – mine has done 4 masks so far and there’s still half a package left.
fabric scissors
embroidery scissors or other small scissors with a very fine, sharp point
iron & ironing board
pressing cloth (to protect the fleece from the heat of the iron – an old teatowel or largish scrap of fabric will work fine. Just make sure the cloth doesn’t have dark colours whose dye might bleed)
sewing machine
pencil
permanent marker (if you are designing your own mask or mask template)
coloured markers or crayons (if you are designing your own mask or mask template)
ribbon (2 -3 feet)
[optional] beads, sequins, feathers or other decorations to add to your mask
sad panda mask template OR follow the instructions in Part 1 below to design your own. I’ve also posted my phoenix mask template. Read more

Dream Dictionary

The significance of dreams has probably been debated since people first developed the ability to communicate. Despite this, there's still no agreement on why we dream. It's hard to believe that dreams have no meaning at all, though, especially when it's so much fun to try to figure out what they're trying to tell us. To help you interpret your dreams, we've developed a dictionary you can use to look up some of the images and feelings commonly found in these night time visions. Another good thing to try when interpreting dreams is just to trust your instincts! Keep in mind that this is for entertainment purposes and shouldn't be taken too seriously.

Accident
Dreaming of an accident is a warning to pay attention to a certain situation in your real life before it gets out of control.

Achievement
To dream of an achievement denotes that you will be greatly satisfied with the outcome of a situation or project. The bigger the achievement, the greater the satisfaction.

Acne
Dreaming of having acne symbolizes self-esteem issues and your insecurities. You are not comfortable with yourself and feel out of place in certain situations.

Actor/Actress
To see an actor or actress in your dream represents your pursuit of pleasure. Your admiration of a particular celebrity may lead to a desire to have some of their physical or personality traits. To dream that you are an actor denotes that your hard work and labor will be well worth it in the end. Also see Celebrity.

Adoption
To dream that you or others were adopting a child indicates that you are taking on something new and different. Ask yourself what is missing in your life that would make you happy. To dream that you were adopted suggests that you are longing for the child within you.

Afraid
To dream that you were afraid to continue on in some situation signifies trouble in the home and failure in your school or professional life. To see others afraid in your dream signifies that one of your friends will be so wrapped up in his or her own problem that they will not be able to help you out with some favor.

I Could Make That - Lined dice bags

There’s tons of advice out there about how to survive a convention, the most common salient points being things like: shower daily, wear comfortable shoes, carry hand sanitizer at all times and for the love of your everlasting karma, be kind to the poor harried event organizers and your fellow convention goers.
What I’m going to offer by way of fresh new convention advice is to always carry a dice bag. Because inevitably you will find yourself at that booth that sells dice by the cupful, drooling gently and murmuring, “Ooooh, preeeeeetty.” And you’ll remember that you don’t have a set of blue dice yet, and the d4 from your favourite set went missing last month, and they’re so well priced if you buy them by the scoopful…
And then you’ll want somewhere pretty to put all the polyhedral jewels you’ve just bought.
Or to store your MtG counters, or to keep that little bottle of hand sanitizer, or your change (why do wallets never have coin pockets large enough to hold more than four quarters at once?), or the rub-on Optimus Prime tattoo you plan to paste on your buddy’s forehead when he passes out later.
Or buttons! I’ve decided to join in the buttoneering at PAX this year, and give out buttons with my little imaginary Tally’s Bestiary critters on them. Check more on nheilke.com

Parrot Sings Let the Bodies Hit the Floor

If you don't like the song, don't watch the video- it's as simple as that. It's not fake, quite trolling. Check out the other videos I have of Lolita singing. Compare her voice.

10 embarrassing “Before They Were Famous” commercials

We’ve all got to start somewhere. Before making big bucks in Hollywood blockbusters, many actors get their starts in the less-than-ideal world of commercial advertising. Keep reading to review ten super embarrassing vintage TV commercials that feature some of today’s biggest A-list celebrities.

Yep, before he got all famous and into adopting babies and stuff, Brad Pitt was pushing Pringles as a beefed up beach boy. As you can tell by the video, it’s clear that Brad wasn’t likely hired for his acting talent, but rather his ability to keep the prime Pringles target market (ostensibly, girls aged 12 to 25) glued to the TV screen with his ripple-y muscles.

Seven Surprising Uses for Baking Soda

Let us be clear: Baking soda is not going to permanently cure your acne or turn back the cruel hand of time. But if you’re looking to detoxify your body and your household, this multitasking ingredient will make your life easier (and more beautiful) without denting your coffers. Mom may have taught you that baking soda will make your bread rise and your fridge smell better, but did you know of its many cosmetic applications?

Even the ancient Egyptians—and what beauty post would be complete without them?—used a compound similar to baking soda as soap. The stuff is antiseptic, antifungal, and lightly exfoliating. It will take the stains off your coffee mug and your not-so-pearly whites, and can be consumed internally to ease your tummy ache. And fridge odors aren’t the only smells it absorbs so don’t turn your nose up, and bring on the baking soda! Read more

Parmesan Roasted Potatoes Recipe

Roasted potatoes are pretty much my life. I’ve been told that I make one mean batch of roasted potatoes, and so I feel like it’s my civic duty to share the recipe with you today. There really isn’t anything that crazy that goes into these potatoes but I guess they are pretty much like crack. People, including my boyfriend, just can’t get enough of them. I make big vats of these on the weekends so we can use them throughout the week. And without fail, they disappear by Wednesday or Thursday. Read more

'Mickey Mouse and the Medicine Man'

The following mini comic book was part of a promotional collaboration between Walt Disney and General Mills. It features Mickey and Goofy, two distinct psychoactive drugs, surreptitious dosing, a bad shaman, and a "talking" elephant. When it was first produced, it was one of an 8-comic set that cost 15 cents plus one Wheaties-brand cereal box top.

It is one of several psychoactive drug-related uses of Disney characters that in retrospect appear naive and inappropriate. This commercial, drug-positive use of characters designed for children raises a number of issues of historical interest. The ethnocentric cultural references, including the representation of Africans and the superiority of American medications, stand out even against the odd amphetamines-are-good-for-you backdrop. It is notable that Mickey Mouse gives powerful drugs to two other characters without their knowledge or consent. Read the comic here
